McKenna Ewen is a producer with CNN, where he shoots, writes and edits short documentary films. As a visual storyteller, he brings a cinematic approach to news video. He travels the country in search of extraordinary people, challenges conventional wisdom and explores the universal conflicts that connect us all. In 2017, he was named Multimedia Journalist of the Year by the White House News Photographers Association.

Before joining CNN, he worked as a video journalist at The Washington Post and Minneapolis Star Tribune.

As a member of the News Video Coalition, Ewen tested unmanned aircraft for journalism and helped lead the effort to make drone photography legal and safe for news. He is an FAA certified UAS remote pilot.

Ewen has taught visual storytelling at The University of Minnesota and coached at numerous workshops, including NPPA’s Multimedia Immersion, AAJA’s JCamp, Eddie Adams Workshop and the Northern Short Course. He is an Adobe Certified Expert in Premiere Pro.

As a childhood cancer survivor, he graduated magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota in 2009 with a double major in journalism and political science. He lives in Washington, D.C.
